"Room" by Shamir
“Tell me where to go now
Tell me where it ends
Tell me how to explore without showering
Gotta stay in one piece
In between this release
But I see the open door
I am in awe by its allure
But I have to choose
Which door to go through
I stayed trapped in this room”
Where’s the meaning?
Shamir’s new sound for this song represents how we can sometimes feel trapped within our own self. The yearning to go out into the real world can be a real struggle for people that suffer from anxiety. For sufferers of anxiety, finding the motivation and self-comfort to leave your “room”, a multi-variable metaphor for the place where you feel the most safe and comfortable, can be difficult. If this fear of the unknown overpowers us, anxiety can abound as we stay home and ponder what we are missing through our paralysis.
In “Room”, Shamir looks into the process of self-motivation in light of these fears and how to deal with keeping up with appearances. The yearning to do more is represented by the door to the room, but the decision to cross that threshold is the real challenge. Venturing outside the comforts of our “room” and the discomfort of putting up a facade for others can be the biggest barriers for someone in a depressed state. It would be easier to blame others, but in the room you’re the one to blame.
Room’s music video is a visual representation of the routine of getting out of the funk and preparing yourself for the day. The dance of staring at the walls, mindlessly searching on your phone, and throwing clothes around makes this routine realistic, if not autobiographical.
Shamir is mostly known for his quirky, fun dance songs, but this country influenced ode to the stillness and confusion of depression strikes a real chord with his fans. The appeal of Shamir is you have to take him at face value and his honesty about his view on life within the lyrics of every song he writes.
How do we deal with anxiety on various levels? Social anxiety can be hard to deal with on a personal level and beyond. On the outside, it can be seen as people being flaky or introverted, but it is really so much more. Depending on the form of anxiety, it can be hard to understand the underlying causes.
How do we learn to accept ourselves as we are? Self love is important for easing anxiety and being comfortable in our own skin. By learning to love one’s self, it give us the confidence to take on the world every day.
How do you tell the difference between introversion and depression? Listening to your inner self inner is of the utmost importance. If you are feeling more anxious, tired, etc. than it could definitely be a bigger issue at hand.
