Human Vs. Human Crime - Gun Violence: "Jesus Coming" by Rapsody
“We was shooting at each other now we both dying too
I got a family and I know he got a family too
I'm praying to my God and he praying to his too
He fighting for his family and I'm fighting for mine too
Money, oil, land, gold the only plan was to make it back safe with both my feet and hands but
It's time to go home”
Where’s the Meaning?
Opening the song with resonant gunshots, Rapsody immediately sets the tone by throwing listeners into the terrifying, but increasingly recognized, phenomenon of gun violence. Building from this thematic foundation, “Jesus Coming” takes a hard stand on gun violence, approaching the issue with a visceral storytelling tone that makes you picture every single bar as if its scenes in a movie.
Using a hard-hitting phrase she learned from her grandmother, Laila, after whom the album is named, Rapsody comments on the speed and permanence of premature deaths attributable to gun violence: “give me my flowers while I can still smell them”.
Gun violence has been a hot topic over the past few years as school shootings and gun-related violence across the United States continue to rise. Rapsody reminds us that regardless of skin color, gun violence cannot be tolerated as we should all have a common respect for our fellow men and women and love each other as brothers and sisters. In this work and her others, Rapsody continuously strives to comment on an array of modern issues in the hopes that others will hear and gain an increased appreciation for and opposition to the ramifications and permanence of societies most heinous acts.
Aside from legislative movement, which has been largely stifled, what are some alternative ways that we as a society of individuals could help our communities in preventing gun violence?
CSGV has exposed the dangers of guns in communities across the nation. “CSGV’s guiding principle is simple: We believe that all Americans have a right to live in communities free from gun violence.”
Everytown for Gun Safety is another organization in the fight against gun violence in America. They state “Gun violence touches every town in America. For too long, change has been thwarted by the Washington gun lobby and by leaders who refuse to take common-sense steps that will save lives.”
